A Point Of View

In My View

TERM LIMITS

"The long term legislator invariably develops an acute attack of spendinitis which is followed by the need and the thirst for an antidote called chronic taxation. Since the advent of recorded history the tax collector has always been the dreaded nemesis of any nation as well as the point man for ensuring the power of the despots.

Today we are the greatest nation on this earth and yet even this nation, as time unfolds, has fallen prey to the plague of continued and increased taxation of its populace. A disease which is ever prevalent when a particular caste has been allowed the luxury of office longevity. The scourge of heavy taxation bedevils and belittles us and will continue to be inescapable until we unearth the embedded.

The need for study of a return to part time legislators is becoming more and more credulous and a possibility but well beyond the scope of this article.

Possibly the best eulogy for their abysmal track record was written by Canadian Publisher Margaret Murray when she wrote that, "governments are like underwear, they start smelling pretty bad if you don't change them once in a while."

Politicians

Most people who run for political office will do most anything to get elected short of kicking the family pet. They attack their opponent with falsehoods, inaccuracies and exposure of their private life. They portray them as being a despot seeking to destroy the planet. Isn't there an (8th) commandment that says "Thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor."

And for what? So they can gain office themselves and pursue those same self serving interest they accuse their opponent of wanting to do. They call themselves statesmen. I view them as being one step above those who prey on children.

Consider this, would it not be a wonderful thing if we had a set of commandments regarding those who seek public office.

_____________________________________________

I will not speak negatively about my opponent. I will only talk about those things I want to accomplish while in office.

I will impose term limits on myself and not serve more than six years.

I will not accept gifts or compensation from Lobbyist.

I will not sell or trade (pork) my vote for political favors.

I will not accept any amenities that are not readily available to my constituents for equal value such as health insurance and retirement benefits.

I will serve my office with dignity, honesty and fairness and conduct my personal behavior above reproach.

I will not abuse the power of my office.

I will allow my office to be open for review and scrutiny.

I will avoid even the appearance of any impropriety.

I will keep my constituency informed on a regular basis of current events.

A NEW BEGINNING ?

"We've come to the end" so says John McCain. "Change has come to America" so says Barack Obama. Yes we have come to the END and yes "CHANGE" (though not at the moment) will come to America. But not the kind of "CHANGE" we expect. Regardless of who was elected "CHANGE" could not be more imminent. America has lived on credit cards far too long where bankruptcy has become inevitable and our government and it's politicians due to its divisiveness rather than unity have expanded the national debt measurable only in terms of light years and beyond leaving our children and their children's children with an unforgivable burden. Now more sooner than later I predict some of us will see the coming events transpire. (1) Higher taxes which will drive investors out of the market. (2) Devaluation of the market down to levels below 2000.00. (3) Serious devaluation of the dollar to the point where it becomes nearly worthless. (4) Inflation in double digits. (5) Soaring interest rates. (6) Foreign investors such as China calling in their notes. (7) Nationalization of American investments abroad. (8) Global conflicts never before imaginable. (9) A new world order mandated by the UN evolving along with a new world currency. And finally and sadly ( 10) Lawlessness and civil unrest not seen since the civil war in this country we call America. Is their a solution? Yes but not without considerable suffering on the part of each of us and businesses here in America. It will involve much sacrifice of each of us as well as business and industry. If the government and the politicians will get out of the way we can do it and our children will not have to suffer. This country could have been like the tiny country of Kuwait where health care and education are free. Their people profit from the sale of their oil. We have more oil and coal resources than anywhere in the world and the technology to develop it safely. Yet we have been hindered by the EPA and their politicians for years. We could have sold less than half of our oil and paid off our national dept plus have free health care and education. Yet our politicians prefer to have us pay $700 billion dollars a year for foreign oil. Just remember we are in the mess we are in now because of our politicians.

Our Constition is based on a government of the people, for the people, by the people. George Washington was once asked if he wanted to be King, he said no. Oboma has said "I will change the world." George Bush once said "Either your with me or you are against me." This statement drew heavy critizism from the democrats. In a different context is this not what Oboma just said ? Hail King Oboma and his congressional court.

                                   Health Care

In her recent article "Deadly Doctors" Obama Advisers Want to Ration Care," former New York Lt. Gov. Betsy McCaughey, founder of the Committee to Reduce Infection Deaths, reports on where Emanuel sees the real savings, citing an article he wrote last year in the Journal of the American Medical Association: "Savings, he writes, will require changing how doctors think about their patients: Doctors take the Hippocratic Oath too seriously 'as an imperative to do everything for the patient regardless of the cost or effects on others.'"

The "effects on others" is the key. He's saying we've got to think more collectively and less about ourselves. "Emanuel," explained McCaughey, "wants doctors to look beyond the needs of their patients and consider social justice, such as whether the money could be better spent on somebody else."

If "social justice" demands more spending on the young and less on the old, Emanuel explains why this isn't a case of discrimination: "Unlike allocation by sex or race, allocation by age is not invidious discrimination; every person lives through different life stages rather than being a single age. Even if 25-year-olds receive priority over 65-year-olds, everyone who is 65 years now was previously 25 years."

Granny, in short, should move on because she's had her chance.

An essay co-authored by Emanuel on the "just allocation of health care resources" in the Hasting Center Report (November-December 1996) provides some detail regarding who should be rationed out of the system. "Services" provided to individuals who are irreversibly prevented from being or becoming participating citizens are not basic and should not be guaranteed. An obvious example is not guaranteeing health services to patients with dementia."

We should die, in short, if we're deemed by the authorities to be insufficiently participating.
