Painting # Seascape 2011-214

Story:

Someone asked if I could do figures? Well that covers a broad spectrum of painting. I said if we are talking about portraits the answer is yes. You may not like my style but my two favorite mediums for portraits are pastels and oils.

One of my favorite portrait artists was “Pino”. I say was because he passed away back in 2010. “Pino” was Italian, born in 1939. He began his painting career at an early age and had no shortage of subjects to paint living in a house full of women that is sisters, aunts, cousins and of course his mother who posed for him often. He was not distracted by such things as televisions, computers and other electronics that are available to children today. Did I not mention he was right in the middle of a war torn nation, world War II.

His focus was always the face and everything else became secondary, loose and impressionistic. I like his style because it is quick and have tried to follow in his footsteps. His paintings were for the most part large in the 30” x  40” range. To stay in practice I will often pick up a photo of one of his paintings and see how closely I can come to reproducing it. This in fact is one that I just completed. I spent perhaps off and on, four hours.
