Painting # Still life Demonstration 2011-207
Story:
"Roses are red, violets are blue" To the best of my knowledge this was first time this phrase was used, found in the epic poem "Faerie Queen" written by Edmund Spenser, recognized as one of the greatest poets in the English language. This was written in celebration of Queen Elizabeth back in 1599.
As a young boy I can vaguely remember passing out Valentines to young sweet hearts that captured my heart, saying just that "Roses are Red and Violets are Blue, Etc." But as I look back across all those yesterdays from the valentines to corsages, the bouquets to pretty embossed cards edged with lace, I am reminded of the rose, so beautiful, so velvety soft, its color so deep and full and a fragrance that is intoxicating. I have examined the rose carefully; it's many petals, its many colors and sweet fragrances that attract the bees, the birds and the butterfly. Personally I find a certain sensual eroticism in its beauty and structure and the sharp thorns that protect it from those who would violate its sanctuary. Thus it is my love affair of the rose that lures it from my pallet to my canvas.
